At Secret Kiwi Kitchen, we’re all about celebrating life’s sweet moments—and there’s nothing more joyful than a birthday cake made with love. But for too many children, especially those in foster care, hospice, women's refuge, or whose families are struggling to make ends meet, that simple joy isn’t a given.
That’s why The Cake Detective moves me so deeply.
Founded by the incredible Laura Casey, The Cake Detective is a small but mighty charity based in Hamilton that delivers beautifully personalised birthday cakes to children who might otherwise go without. Over 3,500 cakes have already been gifted—each one a spark of joy, a reminder that every child matters, and a moment of celebration during what are often very tough times.
When we learned about The Cake Detective, we knew we had to help. This school holiday, we donated cake and cupcake mix for their fundraiser—an adorable cupcake decorating workshop for kids. All proceeds go toward making more birthday dreams come true.
What Laura and her team do is not just bake cakes. They restore dignity. They wrap children in aroha. They remind families that they’re seen and supported. And they do it all with the most joyful, colourful, and imaginative cakes you’ve ever laid eyes on. Paddington Bear, soccer balls, orcas—every design tells a story. Every cake says: "You are worth celebrating."
There’s something sacred about coming together to share cake. It’s not about the treat alone. It’s about community, love, and the power of being acknowledged.
