Over the past year, we’ve been thinking a lot about kindness, not as an abstract idea, but as something you practise through small, deliberate actions.
At Secret Kiwi Kitchen, that has meant quietly supporting the communities we’re part of. We’ve donated products to Breast Cancer Foundation NZ fundraisers, helped local kids’ sports teams with raffles and events, supported Cake Detective and their work bringing celebration cakes to children who might otherwise miss out, contributed to the SPCA New Zealand, and planted trees through Trees That Count.
Doing Right by People
Kindness also shows up in everyday moments. When a customer calls with a concern, we try to make it right. Sometimes that’s a replacement. Sometimes it’s a refund. Sometimes it’s simply taking the time to listen properly. We don’t always get everything perfect, but we do care about how people feel when they interact with us.
Where It Started
Secret Kiwi Kitchen began during the pandemic, a time marked by uncertainty, isolation, and a lot of anxiety about the future. Like many small businesses born then, we weren’t trying to build something big or bold. We wanted to bring a little joy into local kitchens and communities, something comforting and familiar at a moment when very little felt steady.
That intention hasn’t changed.
Kindness in Everyday Life
We love knowing our products turn up in people’s lives in both big and small ways, birthday cakes, celebrations, fundraisers, but also in the quieter moments: a cup of tea with a friend, a pause in the afternoon, a small act of self-care, such as a latte finished with a sprinkle of edible flowers. Food that doesn’t demand an occasion.

Why It Matters Now
The world feels a little chaotic at the moment. Everything moves fast, opinions are loud, and it’s easy to feel disconnected. We don’t pretend a baking mix or a packet of flowers can fix that but we do believe that small, thoughtful things still matter.
So we’ll keep doing what we can: showing up, supporting where we’re able, and being part of people’s lives in ways that feel genuine and kind.
